Getting my sisters to run a race with me was one of my goals for this year! It finally happened this weekend with my sister, Cristina Villarreal! Second sister, the first was my sister, Alicia, she did the Race to Robie Creekin 2004. Cristina just finished one in her home town, Bremerton, WA. I am so proud you, hermana! (my crying right now.) Not to mention my cousin Romy, that was a bonus. You see, my familia has always struggled with their weight and to run a 5k IS a big deal. I hate to say this but, a lot of Mexicanos gain weight in the United States. Maybe because food is our culture and running isn’t. But also activity isn’t in our vocabulary, well, if it isn’t dancing. I mean my abuelito walked across the border from Nuevo Ladero for a nickel, and that was probably the only exercise he got outside of work. Two generations later, here we are and my sister, who never thought she could run, did it a 3 mile run!
She took ‘losing weight’ seriously this year. Both Cristina and her son, Noe are doing it as a family. My cousin and her family are doing it as a city. I go to Bremerton every month to weigh and measure them. Noe came to stay with me over the summer as an intern in my business. The real motive was to lose weight the extra weight he put on over last year’s school year, learn how to cook healthy yet good and to workout. It was 24Hr boot camp and he’s taking it to the rest of the family. Every Monday Wednesday and Friday he was up by 5:30am (my little bear loves to sleep)! Also, Tuesday and Thursday he did my PE for Adults class!
I love my job but it is also my life and when my family gets it (we are stubborn) and to see Cristina, Noe and my cousin Romy cross the finish line, it made my soul smile. Los amo! Thanks for being there Daniel...It’s already a part of our lifestyles.
